Dorset and the Local Area

Slape Hill Barn bed and breakfast stands on the edge of the hamlet of Waytown in Dorset. There is a pub offering lunches and dinners a short walk away.  Nearby is the picturesque village of Netherbury with its very fine old church, and two miles beyond Netherbury lies Beaminster, a particularly beautiful and historic small country town.

This is wonderful walking country and the Dorset coast is about four miles distant.  South west Dorset is an area of woodland, rolling green fields, steep hills, deep valleys and picturesque houses and villages.  It has so much to attract the visitor.  The nearby Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site.  To the west is the seaside town of Lyme Regis, to the east is Abbotsbury with its swannery, lovely sub-tropical gardens, and Chesil Beach running round to Weymouth and Portland.  Nearby Bridport is a lively market town, while further inland Dorchester and Sherborne are well worth a visit.

The area is rich in fine houses and gardens, many of them owned by the National Trust, as well as beautiful hamstone villages  –  usually with a good pub.  There are excellent restaurants and coffee shops, and a wealth of artists’ studios and workshops.  A number of villages hold Gardens Open events as well as fetes and summer fairs.  Beaminster Arts Festival offers literary and musical events, and during Dorset Art Weeks many studios and workshops are open to the public. There really is plenty to see and do in Dorset  –  come and try it!
